DAY 1: LOS ANGELES
Arrive in Los Angeles and proceed to your hotel. The day is free to enjoy. Whether it's Universal Studios or Disneyland, the beach or Beverly Hills, there is much to see in the City of Angels.
DAY 2: LOS ANGELES – DISNEYLAND – SAN DIEGO (128m / 205km)
Depart Los Angeles for the short drive to Anaheim, home to Mickey Mouse and the original Disneyland. You may explore this fantasyland of magic before continuing south to sunny San Diego. Upon arrival, discover some of the sites for which this city is known, such as Balboa Park, the Gas Lamp District and Seaport Village. If time permits visit the world famous San Diego Zoo or see Shamu, the killer whale at SeaWorld.
DAY 3: SAN DIEGO – PHOENIX / SCOTTSDALE (380m /608km)
Leave the Pacific Coast behind and cross the coastal mountains before descending into the fertile Imperial Valley where the cool waters of the Colorado River irrigate crops of alfalfa, onions and lettuce. Continue driving east along the Mexican border to Yuma, once better known as a stagecoach stop for the Butterfield Stage. On crossing the mighty Colorado you’re welcome to Arizona, one of the last states to join the Union in 1912. Arrive early evening in Phoenix / Scottsdale.
DAY 4: PHOENIX / SCOTTSDALE – SEDONA – GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK (220m / 352km)
Depart north through desert landscape of barren rock and Saguaro cactus into the Verde Valley. You may choose to take a side trip to Montezuma Castle, a well-preserved Native American cliff dwelling before heading to secluded Sedona and its surrounding rugged Red Rock country. Then ascend through Oak Creek Canyon and the Kaibab Forest to the Coconino Plateau before arriving at Flagstaff located on Historic Route 66. Continue to supernatural Grand Canyon where you can spend the afternoon strolling along the South Rim of this awe-inspiring spectacle of ever changing colorful rock formations.
DAY 5: GRAND CANYON – MONUMENT VALLEY – LAKE POWELL / PAGE (290m / 464km)
Take time this morning to discover the sunrise over the Grand Canyon’s South Rim and then leave the canyon behind as you enter Navajo country and the Painted Desert. Take a popular detour through sparsely populated Indian Country to Monument Valley where isolated monoliths of red sandstone tower 1000 feet above the valley floor. Arrive in Page, site of massive manmade Lake Powell. Learn about previous life in the canyon and the building of this remarkable engineering wonder at the Carl Hayden Visitor Center.
DAY 6: PAGE – BRYCE CANYON – ZION NATIONAL PARK / ST. GEORGE (261m / 418km)
A morning departure north into Utah passes through scenic Kanab and takes you to the land of hoodoos known as Bryce Canyon National Park. After exploring supernatural Bryce Canyon, return south to Zion National Park, a monument of time carved by wind and water and well known for geological features with names like The Three Patriarchs, Bridge Mountain, White Throne and the hidden Temple of Sinawava. After visiting the park, continue the short distance south to St. George.
DAY 7: ZION NATIONAL PARK / ST. GEORGE – LAS VEGAS (118m / 190km)
Should you desire, revisit Zion National Park to see more of this impressive gorge carved by the mighty Virgin River. Then continue to Las Vegas. Before arriving, you may want to make a diversion to marvel at the Hoover Dam, one of the highest dams ever constructed. Arrive in Las Vegas, the man-made miracle in the desert.
DAY 8: LAS VEGAS
This day is at leisure. Las Vegas is a city that never sleeps. Try your hand with “Lady Luck” or see one of the many famous shows with top-name performers. This city of glitz and glamour will dazzle you with its colossal hotels, glittering lights, casino action and headline shows. Take the time to visit the well-known resorts with their individual themes and a myriad of attractions or just relax poolside.
DAY 9: LAS VEGAS – DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK (172m / 275km)
Depart westward into the desert and Death Valley National Park. This area of unexpected contrasts offers eerie sites of barren desolation including the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere and mountains over 11,000 feet (3,350 m). Make a photo stop at Badwater, which is 84 feet below sea level, or hike to Zabriskie Point for impressive views of the valley. Drive along colorful formations before visiting the oasis of Furnace Creek Ranch, located in the center of the expansive valley.
DAY 10: DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK – LOS ANGELES (226m / 362km)
Continue through the great Mojave Desert and contemplate the impression this harsh land made on the first immigrants migrating to California. On the way, pass Mojave, home to the world record holding Voyager experimental aircraft and Edwards Air Force Flight
Test Center, desert test site for the military where “Chuck” Yeager first broke the sound barrier in 1947. Arrive late afternoon in the megalopolis of Los Angeles.
